Claudio Monteverdi

           6th book of madrigals

botticelli-detail-windsClaudio Monteverdi’s madrigals occupy a unique place in the history of music. The recurrent theme is (not surprisingly) that of tragic love. Starting with his Sixth Book of Madrigals, the author turned to stile concertato which employs instrumental accom-paniment with elements of dramatic action. The work can thus be perceived as an imaginary borderline between Renaissance and Early Baroque in music. Monteverdi produced several musical versions of Rinuccini’s Lamento d’Arianna;this programme features the madrigal one. According to period accounts the composition often moved listeners to tears.

The Music in Prague during the Reign of Rudolf II (Philippe de Monte, Jacobus Vaet, Philippe Verdelot)

veduta

Towards the end of the 16th century, Prague became the residential city of the Imperial Court. A great lover of the arts, Rudolf II invited to Prague the best artists of the time and thus transformed the provincial city into one of the cultural centres of renaissance Europe, providing it with lustre comparable to the royal courts in France and Spain.

The programme comprises sacred and secular music by the court composer Philippe de Monte, as well as music by his contemporaries whose music was performed in Prague in Rudolf’s times.

Officium

Requiem in memoriam Josquin Desprez (Jean Richafort, Josquin Desprez)

officium

Jean Richafort was the most talented of all Josquin Desprez’s students. He became member of the Royal Chapel of Louis XIII and later was employed at the court of Mary of Hungary in Brussels. Upon the death of his great teacher, Richafort composed an elaborate requiem, using the texts of both the Ordinary and the Proper to pay tribute to the master of the renaissance polyphony.  This piece, unusually long for the time of its origin, is a unique piece of exquisite beauty and purity.

The Gems of the Sistin Chapel

Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, Jacques Arcadelt, Andrea Willaert, Tomas Luis de Victoria

creation2

This programme is a reconstruction of music for the mass in the Sistin Chapel towards the end of the 16th century. The core of the programme is Missa Papae Marcelli by Giovanni Battista Pierluigi da Palestrina, commissioned by the Pontifical Council. Palestrina invested his best skill and deepest faith into this work which, due to its stylistic and expressive purity, provided a new path for religious music in general and became his best known composition. Palestrina’s famous contemporaries, Arcadelt, Willaert a Victoria, complete this masterpiece with other parts of the mass that alternate with Gregorian chant.

Portrait of humanist and noble rebel Krystof Harant

harant
